That’s right…. grab the ropes! Get vertical – on ice. Whether you’re looking for a challenging 1,000 foot climb up a sheer ice wall or a two-hour recreational lesson with a licensed Adirondack guide, Lake Placid’s ice climbing options cater to experts, beginners, and everyone in between.
Nowhere else in the world can you skate on the outdoor Olympic Oval where Eric Heiden won 5 Gold Medals and then walk inside and visit the same rink that the famous “Miracle on Ice” took place back in 1980. Not to mention, you can skate on our private rinks here at the resort or around Mirror Lake on the outdoor track too! Private lessons can be arranged!
Lake Placid’s Olympic venues are alive and well. In fact, we still host international events throughout the year and many Olympic athletes train in Lake Placid. We can help suggest a self-guided tour of the venues or arrange for a personalized tour experience. Bobsled, Luge, the Ski Jumps, Whiteface Mountain, or the Olympic Museum… it’s all right here!

Always wanted to work with the best? Well…. Andrea Burke is just that! As a 4-time Olympic Medalist & World Champion, Andrea is the most decorated biathlete in history. Andrea and her husband Tim Burke (a long time US bi-athlete & Olympian himself) now live in Lake Placid. Andrea offers personal training classes, nutritional counseling and much more.
Lake Placid is a golfer’s paradise. Home to multiple courses, including the famous “Whiteface Club” and Pro J. Peter Martin, Lake Placid has something for golfers of every skill level. Private lessons and coaching available.
If it’s a leisurely game you’re after, we have a tennis court right here on property for guests’ use. We even offer complimentary rackets and balls at the Front Desk. If you’re a more experienced player looking for a hitting partner, a lesson, or maybe just a more competitive atmosphere, the Whiteface Club & Resort’s Tennis Center features perennial gardens, private parking and a full-service Pro Shop offering clothing and restringing services. Private lessons, hitting sessions with the pros and clinics are offered throughout the season on their meticulously maintained Har-tru courts.
Nestled in the heart of the Adirondacks, we have miles upon miles of terrain for both the road biker (can you say Ironman training….?) and the mountain/trail biker alike. We even offer touring bikes for rent through our Front Desk, perfect for a leisurely ride around town or Mirror Lake itself.
Whatever species you want to target, we probably have it here for you (Bass, Perch, Pike, Trout to name a few). For those looking to stay “close to home”, you can even troll up some rainbow or lake trout right out our front door on Mirror Lake. At the north end of town, you can fish Lake Placid itself which produces some big lakers every spring. In the nearby village of Saranac Lake, the Saranac River flows through town and offers fine fishing as it winds toward Lake Champlain.
Offering some of the best trout fishing in the entire country, the east and west branches of the Ausable River are just a short drive away. There’s also a lengthy list of lesser-known streams that hold both wild trout and state-stocked fish, as well as backcountry ponds where beautiful brook trout cruise the depths and offer superb fishing in a truly wild and remote setting. Insider tip… the best hatches begin in May and the insect activity has the trout looking up, as we like to say. Are you new to the sport? That’s okay don’t fret. We can arrange for a guide to show you the ropes and have you landing fish in no time.
Home to the largest trail system in the nation, the Adirondacks offers some of the best hiking in the East with over 2,000 miles of marked hiking trails. Most notable among these are the region’s trails leading to the 46 High Peaks, most of which are over 4,000 feet. With so many mountains and trails to choose from, it’s no surprise that hiking and climbing are favorites among Lake Placid’s outdoor activities. We have trail maps and suggested hikes for people of all ages and skill levels. Guided hikes can also be arranged for anyone looking for local expertise.
Lake Placid is home to the High Peaks and some of the best rock climbing in the Adirondacks. From the biggest wilderness cliff in the East to secluded wilderness walls and backcountry crags, Lake Placid’s High Peaks region offers a variety of challenges for climbers of all ability levels.
