LAKE PLACID, N.Y.
– One of the Adirondacks most challenging and
scenic golf courses will host the Whiteface Open Championship on July 14-15 in Lake Placid.
The par 71 Whiteface
Club and Resort, now in its 114th season, will welcome a field
of professionals as well as men and women amateurs in a variety of age groups,
including seniors and super seniors.
The entry fee of $150 includes a practice round on July 13
after 12 PM, 36 holes of stroke play competition, golf cart for all three
rounds and a commemorative jacket for each competitor.
Several thousand dollars in prizes will be awarded in gross
and net divisions for the amateurs, highlighted by free 2013 golf memberships
for the low gross scores in the men’s and women’s brackets.
In addition, the professional field will play for a minimum
$1,000 winner’s check.
The event is officially hosted by PGA Club Professional J.
Peter Martin, who has spent the last 35 years at the Whiteface Club, and is a
member of the Northeastern New York PGA Hall of Fame.

“We always want to invite golfers who want to play one of
the great courses in the east,” said Martin. “The Whiteface Club always tests
all aspects of a player’s mental and physical games. They will hit all the
clubs in their bag, and are asked to define their strategy for all 18 holes.
And we wrap the experience with our hospitality and the natural beauty of Whiteface Mountain and the shores of Lake
Placid.”
The meticulously groomed track was designed by John Van
Kleek in consultation with Walter Hagen. The course has consistently garnered
accolades as a must-play in New York State, including a 2005 ranking of sixth
by Golf Week magazine.
It has subsequently served as site of the New York State
Senior Women’s Amateur Championship, as well as a stop on the 2011 and 2012 Sunbelt Senior Tour. The latter is
a developmental circuit for players 47 and older, many with PGA Tour
experience, who aspire to play on the PGA
Tour’s Champions Tour. It will re-visit the Whiteface Club, with a pro-am
format, in late August.
The Whiteface Club Golf Course was recently voted “Best in
the Mountains” in the annual survey of readers of the Adirondack Daily Enterprise newspaper.
A tournament banquet, not included in the entry fee, will
precede the event on July 13. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres begin at 5 PM, with
dinner to follow at 6 PM.
