Great Gardens and Landscaping Symposium

Set for April 24-25

Lake Placid, NY - (March 27, 2009) --- The Mirror Lake Inn is pleased to announce it will be hosting its annual Great Gardens and Landscaping Symposium on April 24 and 25.  Guests of this package will enjoy a delightful stay at Lake Placid's only AAA Four Diamond lakeside resort as well as a dynamic series of lectures led by renowned garden professionals including Kerry Mendez, Tara Dillard, Paul Tukey and Dr. Mark Starrett.

Lecture topics for the Great Gardens Symposium are as follows:

• Lessons Learned from a Garden Tour of France and England. Presenter Tara Dillard, an award-winning speaker, designer and author of five garden and landscaping books will give a presentation filled with proven landscaping tips from gardens that have performed beautifully for centuries. Later in the day, Tara will also lead a lecture on landscape design that will focus on techniques and plant combinations that add up to gorgeous, low-maintenance, and affordable gardens.
• Hudson: A Chemical Reaction. This exciting new documentary by Paul Tukey features how one small community in Canada took on Home Depot to ban the use of lawn chemicals in their town. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court. Hudson's resulting win has become a landmark case and a great win for the organic lawn care movement, both in Canada and the United States.
• Hot New Perennials and Other Celebrities. Kerry Mendez, garden consultant, designer, writer, and teacher, will present new, cold-hardy perennials that have recently, or will soon be, introduced to the market. She'll also include some favorites that should be used more for showy, low-maintenance gardens. Kerry is the owner of Perennially Yours (www.pyours.com ), a family-owned business in Ballston Spa, NY that specializes in teaching gardening classes and consulting.
• Beautiful Lawns Grown Organically. Paul Tukey, author, editor, publisher and lecturer, is on a mission to reduce pesticide usage across the country, one lawn and garden at a time. Paul will share his incredible wisdom on the why and how of organic lawn care.
• Cary Award Plants Will Make YOU a Winner. Presenter: Dr. Mark Starrett; professor of horticulture at the University of Vermont, award-winning author, lecturer, and researcher. The prestigious Cary Awards, administered annually by Tower Hill Botanic Gardens (outside of Boston, MA), are presented to woody shrubs, trees and vines that are distinctive, hardy, season-extenders for New England gardens. Mark will introduce you to these outstanding plants that dress up landscapes with little effort on your part.

NEW for 2009 is the Pre-Symposium Workshop, taking place on Friday morning, April 24th from 9:00 a.m. - noon.  This special program includes interactive lectures and roundtables with three of the symposium's noteworthy speakers.  Attendance is limited to 50 people.  The Pre-Symposium package is $245 for a single and $315 for a double. This includes Thursday's accommodations in a classic room; breakfast on Friday, the pre-symposium lectures and roundtables, and handouts. The Great Gardens Symposium has one and two night packages available.  Guests can chose to stay one night (Friday, April 24):  $342 for a single or $488 for a double and includes full breakfast and lunch on Saturday as well as five lectures, symposium handouts, garden gift, and door prizes. The two night package (April 24 & 25) is $554 for a single or $676 for a double. Taxes and gratuities are additional.
