Mirror Lake Inn restaurant manager enhances knowledge while vacationing

Katie Welch was on a dual mission last month.

While vacationing in the Tuscany region of Italy, the Mirror Lake Inn’s restaurant manager was looking for some rest and relaxation after a busy winter overseeing the staffs of The View Restaurant and Taste Bistro. But she was also looking to enhance her knowledge of the finer grapes that are found in Tuscany’s vineyards.

She said that knowledge was everywhere. “You didn’t have to go to a winery for a good wine,” Katie remarked.

Of the products she sampled, some are already found in the two dining establishments, and after this trip, a few more may find their way to Lake Placid’s only AAA Four Diamond restaurant inside the Mirror Lake Inn.

“We toured the vineyards, sampled the products and learned more about the process,” said Welch. “I am sharing that information with staff here, and in turn, we will pass on useful information when a dining room guest is trying to decide on an appropriate pairing.”

Katie also returned with an appreciation for the Italian way of life, which prioritizes how the work day, and life in general, is structured.

“We have too much stuff,” she said, referring to the American way of life. “They are modern but in a different way. They live simply. You can tell they are proud to live there.”

Mirror Lake Inn has been the recipient of the Wine Spectator Award for the past 15 years. It’s efforts like Katie’s that will hopefully garner the 16th and continue to separate this property from the rest.

Mark Sperling, General Manager of the Whiteface Club Companies, in Lake Placid, N.Y., has announced the start of the Whiteface Club and Resort’s expansion into its Premium Forest Brook Estates sub-division.

The announcement comes on the heels of the Whiteface Club’s inclusion in Country Living magazine as one of 51 photos that prove America truly is beautiful. It is not only one of the publication’s 51 highlighted locations nationwide, but also drew the cover position for the feature section. The Whiteface Club is sister property to the AAA Four Diamond Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa, also in Lake Placid.

The first phase of development is the installation of its infrastructure which ultimately will include municipal water, sewer, cable television and internet, and underground electrical services at each residence.

There are 22 lots in this neighborhood development ranging in size from one to three acres. Each provides panoramic views of the Southern Range of the Adirondack Mountains as well as the Club’s historic championship golf course. Three lots have been sold and two custom homes have been designed for new home owners with construction slated for this spring and summer.

“We’ve experienced steady growth over the past 12 years which we believe is a result of our commitment of financial and human resources to upgrade the amenities, services and ambiance of this resort community,” said Sperling.

Currently the Whiteface Club and Resort features an 18-hole golf course, tennis center with six clay courts, waterfront complete with marina, cross country ski trails in the winter and two restaurants including the seasonal Moose Lodge Boathouse Restaurant which is located on the shores of Lake Placid providing panoramic views of the Lake and Whiteface, the Olympic Mountain.

Each home owner is provided a full slate of services including lawn care, snow removal, garbage service and cold weather checks when homes are unoccupied as well as membership to the Club.

The Whiteface Club and Resort, originating as the Westside Hotel in 1881 and renamed the Whiteface Inn in 1891, has been continually serving the public since that time making it the oldest and longest operating resort in the Adirondacks.

The evolution of the property from its historical seasonal use as a hotel, to a year-round resort community, began in 1980 with the demolition of the Whiteface Inn and the construction of condominiums.

Currently, custom design homes are being built in various neighborhood sub-divisions providing a range of home owner opportunities.

“While we still have a number of available custom home opportunities available, there is a finite number available through the building rights provided by a variety of permits issued by the Adirondack Park Agency and the Town of North Elba,” concluded Sperling.

Earth Day endeavor observed at nearby Paul Smiths College

Paul Smith’s College is cancelling classes this Earth Day, but students won’t take the day off – they’re fanning out across the North Country to serve food and volunteer at several community groups and non-profit organizations.

Students, faculty and staff will take part in the college’s second annual Earth Day of Service on Wednesday, April 22. Projects are scheduled at the Left Bank Café in Saranac Lake, the Wild Center in Tupper Lake, the Saranac Village at Will Rogers retirement community in Saranac Lake, area animal shelters, and many other places. Volunteers are doing roadside cleanup, rake lawns, make cards for injured veterans and sick children, and much more. Classes across campus have been canceled for the day to maximize participation.

Culinary, hospitality and baking students will cap off Earth Day with a 6 p.m. benefit dinner at the Left Bank Café.

Chef Kevin McCarthy’s Contemporary Cuisine class will prepare the “From the Earth” supper, which consists of an all-vegetable, five-course menu, and Chef Deb Misik’s pastry students will take care of dessert.

Professor Joe Conto’s hospitality students will serve the meal. All proceeds will be donated to the Adirondack Farm to School Initiative.
