Lake Placid bidding for Ironman 70.3 Worlds

This is an important week, albeit a nervous one, for the village of Lake Placid.

Officials are trying to impress a committee from the World Triathlon Corporation to bring the 2017 Ironman 70.3 World Championships to the Adirondacks. Lake Placid has advanced to the final three sites from which the WTC will choose a winner. The others are St. George, Utah, and Chattanooga, Tenn.

The prestigious event will be held after Labor Day in 2017.

Lake Placid ready with July 4 lineup

It’s hard to believe, but the July 4 holiday weekend in Lake Placid is straight ahead.

There’s lots happening, highlighted by Set The Night To Music, a fireworks display on the 4th, accompanied by 93.3 WSLP, our hometown radio station in Lake Placid. Start time is approximately 9:45. Get your spot early with chair and blanket, and enjoy the Lake Placid light show.

In addition, the Lake Placid Sinfonietta performs a patriotic tribute Saturday night in Mid’s Park on Main Street at 7:00. That’ll be after the holiday parade down Main Street, and before the fireworks.

There’s a ski jump competition on July 4 at 1:00, featuring 25 men and 25 women, looking to get a leg up in the chase for the Art Devlin Cup. They will sail from the 90 meter hill. There will be other events for younger competitors on the smaller hills in Lake Placid.

The I Love BBQ and Music Festival takes place on the Olympic Oval Friday to Sunday, benefiting the Shipman Youth Center. This is the 10th annual festival, and presents the best of BBQ, with teams coming from around the country and Canada. They will BBQ it out at the World Championship here this weekend, as well as the Junior World Championship. A stellar lineup of regional music acts with take turns under the festival tent, mixed in with the Krusher and BMX Stunt Teams.

The Saturday Night Ice Show begins its summer season Saturday night. 

And of course, the I Love NY Horse Show takes place daily through Sunday. The 3-week event has been coming to Lake Placid since the mid 1970s, and has expanded from 2 weeks. Competition ends July 11.

Lake Placid Region Forecast for the period will be nothing short of stellar for these and any other outdoor activity that you’d like to do.
