Adirondacks are a winter paradise as we ring in the New Year12/31/2012 Your blogger made it to Whiteface Mountain Saturday morning (Dec. 29) for a brilliant half-day of skiing. Numerous runs from the summit of Whiteface and Little Whiteface made one thing very clear: with over 2 feet of new snow recently, these are some of the best holiday conditions we've experienced in years. Epic. Awesome. Skiing.
This Whiteface Mountain photo was shot on Dec. 28 (ORDA photo) Not to be outdone, but if you like the mellower kind of skiing and riding, try Mount Van Hoevenberg (MVH), just 5 miles from Lake Placid on Rt. 73. A total of 50 kilometers (31 miles) of tracked and packed conditions await striders and snowshoers.
This Andy Teig / MVH photo captures the enormity of the snowfall of recent days When you finish these activities, you must return to Lake Placid, where you can shop on Main Street. Stores include many locally owned and operated businesses as well as a handful of outlet stores. Or just continue walking all the way around Mirror Lake. It's almost 3 miles in length, bringing you to and from Mirror Lake Inn. Your blogger took this image of Main Street while walking his dog around Mirror Lake Maybe between the skiing, shopping and walking, you just need to sit down and have a cold one......or a warm one. We'll suggest our Cottage Cafe, across the street from the hotel. You can sip outside or inside, year-round. Our deck there is glassed in. It's warmer there than you think, especially this afternoon, when temps were in the low 20s and the wind was blowing elsewhere. Your blogger took this shot as he walked around Mirror Lake with the lab. He was tempted to order something, but moved on. Talking about me, not the lab. She wanted to stay. Be safe tonight as you move into 2013. Health, happiness and prosperity to all. Happy New Year! TAGS:
