LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - Mitch Adcock,
six shots behind at the start of play, closed the final round of the Adirondack
Senior Open golf tournament Friday with four birdies in the last five holes en
route to a 5-under-par 66 and claimed the $5,000 top prize.
Adcock,
a veteran of the PGA and European Tours, played aggressively on Lake Placid's
Whiteface Club and Resort despite the guessing game created by strong, swirling
winds.
His
66 tied the tournament low and enabled him to sneak past defending champion Javier
Sanchez and John Ross by a stroke.

"I
was going very aggressively to try and at least get my money back," said
Adcock, referring to the tournament entry fee. "I knew today was going to be a
good day. My mindset was to shoot two or three under. It's easier playing that
way. I had good numbers (into the greens) all day. I'm extremely happy with how
I played. I'm just surprised."
The
winner, from Weest Point, Miss., was one under for the round, helped by an eagle
three on the par five 6th hole, before collecting birdies on 14, 15, 17 and 18.
His
final round 66, coupled with previous rounds of 69 and 72, gave Adcock a
three-day total of 6-under-par 207.
"I
shot at the pins," added Adcock. "I was going for it. I wanted a piece of the
money."
Adcock
not only slipped in front of Sanchez and Ross, but overnight leader Tim Conley
as well.
The
champion later attributed some of his success to his new favorite tournament
location.
"This
place is incredible," continued the player who needed two years to come back
from wrist surgery. "It reminds me of Crans Montana in Switzerland when I was
playing on the European Tour. And I played good in Crans. The terrain is bouncy
and mogully, just like there."
Sanchez,
of Mexico, birdied three of the last five holes for an even par 71-208. A
double bogey six on the second hole put him behind schedule. Sanchez's 71 tied
him with Ross, who carded a 4-under-par 67. Born in Burlington, Vt. and living
in Freeman, West Va., Ross birdied four of the final six holes to share the
runner-up spot.

Javier Sanchez needed to make this putt from off the final green to force a playoff.
Tim
Conley, the 36-hole leader from Gainesville, Ga., dropped to a final round
three-over-par 74 and deadlocked for fourth place at 209.

Danny
Edwards won the Super Senior division with a wire-to-wire effort. Edwards, of
Scottsdale, Ariz., posted 69-71-72 for a 1-under 212. The five-time PGA Tour
winner was eight strokes clear of Gary Odom's 220. Odom, of Greenwood, S.C.,
had rounds of 74, 76 and 70.
